What We Do
"Share your food with the hungry and provide the poor wanderer with shelter."
Purley Food Hub
Based at Purley United Reformed Church, the Food Hub has met an ever-increasing need since it was set up by Churches Together in Purley & Kenley in 2013. Clients are referred by local partner agencies and are given food for three meals a day, for three days, for each family member.
CAP Croydon South
Churches Together is part of the CAP Croydon South Partnership, which provides free practical support for people struggling with debt and poverty. Local CAP services include a Money Course, a Job Club, Debt Advice & Support and a new Life Skills group.
We are among over 30 local churches involved in the Croydon Churches Floating Shelter, which offers homeless people a friendly welcome through the winter, with a hot meal and a bed for the night, plus breakfast and a packed lunch. Free warm clothing is also provided.
This project seeks to support the people who work in the local shops, offices and businesses in Purley. The chaplaincy team wear purple fleeces and make fortnightly visits to the community and are ready to talk with anyone, to provide care and give help where possible.
Easter is the main focus of the Christian life, a time when we remember the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Services take place at the various churches and on Good Friday we join in a Walk of Witness through the town followed by a short service outside Tesco.
Christmas is our busiest time of year, with much activity around Christmas Lunch on Jesus and Toys for Joy. These projects distribute hampers and toys to families who would otherwise go without. We also work closely with the local community on the Purley Christmas Lights project.
The churches join together for various other events during the year including the annual Scones and Songs of Praise celebration, as well as quiz nights, concerts and other fundraisers and social events. Joint worship and outreach events also keep us busy.
