400th Anniversary of King James' Bible: (David Booth)
2011 is the 400th anniversary of the publication of the King James (Authorised) version of the Bible, book which made the English language known in every country of the world and whose phrases and words still permeate our lives. The Bible is God's story and it is our story. Our interaction with and understanding of the Bible shapes guides and informs us as we seek to live as kingdom people. As a community of faith we are called to this story to make it our own. Its words bring hope, healing and transformation. But research suggests that fewer and fewer Christians are engaging with the Bible for themselves.
The Church will therefore use 2011 to get involved in experiencing the story in fresh creative ways. When God's people hear and obey God's word the Spirit is at work and lives and communities will be changed. An event to mark this anniversary has been planned on Saturday 7th May, 2011 at the same time as the Coffee Morning. Please start thinking of ideas for this occasion and how we can tell Purley about the Bible.
Let's see what God will do among us
To discover how much you know of the Bible just try this little quiz - all these common phrases in our language come from the King James' Bible, Can you name their source? Answers in blue.
1. Signs of the times - Jesus in Matthew 16.3 - And in the morning it will be foul weather: for today the sky is red and louring. O ye Hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times.
2. Nothing new under the sun- Ecclesiastes 1.9 - The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and there is no new thing under the sun.
3. Wit's end -Psalm 107.27 - They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wit's end.
4. All things to all men- 1 Corinthians 9.22 - To the weak, became I as weak, that I might gain the weak; I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.
5. A house divided against itself- Mark 3.25 - And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand.
6. Sow the wind, reap the whirlwind- Hosea 8.7 - For they have sown the wind and shall reap the whirlwind; it hath no stalk: the bud shall yield no meal: if so be it yield, the strangers will swallow it up.
7. The fat of the land- Genesis 14.18 - And take up your father and your households and come to me: and I will give you the good of the land of Egypt, and you shall eat the fat of the land.
8. Chariots of fire- 2 Kings 2.11 - And it came to pass as they still went on, and talked, that behold there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder, and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.
9. Skin of my teeth- Job 19.20 - My bone cleaveth to the skin of my flesh, and I am escaped with the skin of my teeth.
10. Feet of clay- Daniel 2.33 - His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay.
Also please think how we can tell Purley about the Bible and imagine an event for next year.
Food for thought for the Summer:
A challenging quote from John Wesley: "Have I rejoiced with and for my neighbour in virtue and pleasure? Grieved with (her) in pain, for him in sin?.....Have I revealed any evil of anyone, unless it was necessary to some particular good I had in view? Have I then done it with all the tenderness of phrase and manner consistent with that end?......Has goodwill been, and appeared to be, the spring of all my actions toward others?"

My Dear Friends,
For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and give his life as a ransom for many. Mark 10:43-45
First our love and condolences to the Pearce family on the death of Allan.
And more thoughts from my retreat to share with you.
As I said last month, we were talking about church folk being volunteers and how it was difficult to be too pushy when asking folk to do things in the church because of that.
Then our mentor, Mark saying "Well actually no; they are not volunteers, they are the same as you and me; they are disciples of Jesus Christ and as such are called to follow and to serve" And I want to expand on that a bit.
Of course folk in the church should be asked to do things as part of their life within the church family and as a response to God's love for them.
But also no one including me should have to walk on eggshells and pussyfoot around people - disciples of Jesus - for fear of offending them. We are all adults, called by God to be one body in Christ, to work together to make this world a better place and our first thoughts should not be whether someone has offended us, but how can I serve. Being human, we all do it, think of ourselves first. But over the next two months, I would ask you to consider three things:
- Do I get easily offended?
- Why?
- What can I do to change?
Blessings and good holidays.
